Vernon I Cheadle Alumni Award

BACKGROUND
Dr. Cheadle served as the second Chancellor of UCSB from 1962 to 1977. He is remembered as an outstanding leader who was responsible for the transformation of UCSB into a first-class general campus of the University of California and for his teaching and research as a Professor of Botany from 1936 until 1995.
 
The Vernon I. Cheadle Award was established by the UCSB Alumni Association in honor of Dr. Cheadle's outstanding service to UCSB. The Award is to honor a UC Santa Barbara undergraduate or graduate student who demonstrates a passion for research or creative activities related to the study of plants, including systematics, anatomy, physiology, ecology, paleontology, restoration and conservation, environmental management or science education.
 
ELIGIBILITY
To be considered for the Vernon I. Cheadle Alumni Award, students must:
1. Demonstrate a passion for research or creative activities related to the study of plants, including systematics, anatomy, physiology, ecology, paleontology, restoration and conservation, environmental management or science education. 
2. Be a currently enrolled full-time (12 units minimum) UC Santa Barbara student.
3. Have a current grade point average above 3.0.  Please submit an unofficial transcript from Gold.
 
APPLICATION
1. Please submit a personal statement (not to exceed 500 words) describing your passion for research or creative activities related plant science, ecology, restoration and conservation, environmental management or science education. 
2. One letter of recommendation from an individual who has direct knowledge of your research or creative activities.
3. The personal statement and letter of recommendation are due by April 30, 2021.
 
AWARDS
The Advisory Board for the Vernon and Mary Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (CCBER) will review applications in spring quarter.  The Advisory Board will make a recommendation to the UCSB Alumni Association.  
The recipient will receive $500, which will be deposited into her/his/their BARC account.
