Background
Dr. Cheadle served as the second Chancellor of UCSB from 1962 to 1977. He is remembered as an outstanding leader who was responsible for the transformation of UCSB into a first-class general campus of the University of California and for his teaching and research as a Professor of Botany from 1936 until 1995.
The Vernon I. Cheadle Award was established by the UCSB Alumni Association in honor of Dr. Cheadle's outstanding service to UCSB. The Award is to honor a UC Santa Barbara undergraduate or graduate student who demonstrates a passion for research or creative activities in the following areas: plant science, ecology, restoration and conservation, environmental management or science education.
Eligability
To be considered for the Vernon I. Cheadle Alumni Award, students must:
1. Demonstrate a passion for research or creative activities related to plant
science, ecology, restoration and conservation, environmental management or science education.
2. Be a currently enrolled full-time (12 units minimum) UC Santa Barbara student.
Application
1. Please submit a personal statement (not to exceed 500 words) describing your passion for research or creative activities related plant science, ecology, restoration and conservation, environmental management or science education.
2. One letter of recommendation from an individual who has direct knowledge of your research or creative activities. The attached form (cheadle_award2015_FINAL.pdf) must be submitted directly from the individual providing the recommendation.
3. The personal statement and letter of recommendation are due by April 15, 2016
Awards
The Advisory Board for the Vernon and Mary Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (CCBER) will review applications in spring quarter. The Advisory Board will make a recommendation to the UCSB Alumni Association.
The recipient of the Cheadle Alumni Award will be honored at a breakfast or luncheon during spring quarter. The recipient will receive $500, which will be deposited into his/her BARC account.
