CCBER Vertebrate Collections Now Digitized

Wed, 06/12/2013 - 13:38 -- Katja Seltmann

We are happy to announce that CCBER’s vertebrate collections are now completely digitized. This achievement is the result of the focused efforts of Curatorial Assistant Mireia Beas-Moix and several UCSB student curatorial interns.  Databasing the collections began in earnest in 2009  by several curatorial interns. After receiving an IMLS Museums for America grant in fall 2010, we were able to hire Beas-Moix who finished the cataloging and databasing of over 31,000 specimens ahead of schedule—an amazing feat, considering she was hired late in the 2-year grant period.

She was assisted by Environmental Studies major Lindsey Bennett who worked fall and winter quarters, and she is now working with Emily Helsley, an Environmental Studies student.

The UCSB Herbarium Publication series, started in 1981 and published by the Department of Biological Sciences, consists of six regional floras that include sites in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Mono counties.  They have been digitally scanned and are now available online in the Biodiversity Heritage Library.   The Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration was lucky to get in the BHL scanning queue, and now our Herbarium Publications, which have long been out of print, are online.
